Atlanta Gas Light Adopt Low Pro 15/10

Major Utilities Company Atlanta Gas Light has made the switch from steel plates to the LowPro 15/10, helping them become compliant with GDOT regulations.

Atlanta Gas Light Adopt Low Pro 15/10

Who is Atlanta Gas Light?

Atlanta Gas Light is the largest gas distributor in the Southeast, providing natural gas to over 1.7 million customers in Georgia as part of Southern Company Gas.

Today, we’ll explain how Atlanta Gas Light made the switch from steel road plates to the LowPro 15/10. Making the installation of trench covers quick and simple.

The Challenge

Before adopting the LowPro 15/10, Atlanta Gas Light used steel road plates to cover the sidewalk.

The City of Atlanta no longer allows the use of steel road plates on sidewalks, presenting Atlanta Gas Light with a challenge to find a compliant alternative that meets the following conditions.

  • Load bearing requirements: Choosing trench covers that matched or exceeded the expected durability and load-bearing capacity of 7700lbs.
  • Regulatory compliance: Any new product needed to be compliant with Georgia DOT regulations and ADA compliance.
  • Operational implications: The company was also faced with additional operational challenges. This included the additional costs in both time and money to transport heavy plates by boom truck or cranes. The Department for Transportation in Georgia requires that personnel have both a crane license and a boom truck license, requiring additional investment in training.
  • Cost implications: Transitioning to a new type of trench cover was a significant financial investment, and choosing an alternative product that could meet the needs of the company was essential.

The Solution: LowPro 15/10

The LowPro 15/10 offered the perfect solution for Atlanta Gas Light as an alternative to steel plates.

  • Load bearing requirements: With load bearing capabilities of up to 7700lbs the LowPro 15/10 is ideal for areas with high foot traffic or light vehicle usage.
  • Regulatory compliance: Made from composite plastic, ADA compliant, and approved by Georgia DOT, the LowPro 15/10 is the new industry standard for trench covers.
  • Operational implications: Streamlining operational processes, ultimately cutting out the cost of cranes and boom trucks. With additional savings against training costs as the LowPro 15/10 mitigates the need for heavy machinery and can easily be installed by hand.
  • Cost savings: Saving the company money with an investment in composite plates that meet the company's needs.
